Since I started with a show like Ghost Hunt, let me follow things through with another representative of the supernatural kind, and is relatively new at that, Psychic Detective Yakumo.

Yakumo’s left eye is red. His heterochromic eye not only gives him a mysterious, intimidating air but also gives him the ability to see the spirits of the dead. It is also precisely because of this eye that Yakumo crosses paths with Ozawa Haruka, the female protagonist of the series. As the series progresses, we are shown the secrets behind Yakumo’s left eye and the mystery behind the white-haired man who doggedly pursues him.

Although Yakumo’s cases are as engaging as that of Ghost Hunt’s, the former’s characters and methods aren’t as diverse as the latter’s. As Yakumo has no ability to exorcise or purify, he mainly relies on reasoning with the spirit in order to save it. Although Yakumo’s method seems rather…boring, it gives us a window to examine Yakumo’s principles. The state of Yakumo’s heart plays an integral part in the story so this is something the audience should keep in check. Our protagonist here is also one of those characters who actually have some failure rate. He doesn’t solve each and every case with flying colors – he undergoes some form of internal struggle in each case which further develops his character.

Another plus for this show is its beautiful background music and OP. Emotional scenes are accompanied with violin and piano-charged instrumentals while action-packed scenes are backed with rocking tunes. Plus, the OP is just…hands-down. I love it. Or maybe it’s just me and my thing for drum beats.

All in all, Shinrei Tantei Yakumo is a pretty decent show despite its brevity. The only complain I can give about it is that it’s very short – it seriously could’ve been longer. Plus, it’s open-ended. I want a second season.
