Hey guys!

With a little near three weeks into the the Winter season, I decided to cover a show that, based on how I see other viewers take it, as a “love it or hate it” kind of show. It’s funny, it has romance, I assume there’s gonna be drama, and hey, it’s ecchi (not serious about this one) – It’s Winter 2012’s ironically titled show, Ano Natsu de Matteru.

Ano Natsu de Matteru, or Waiting in the Summer (see the irony) is a rom-com J.C. Staff show, directed by the guy who also worked on Ano hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai and Toradora!, and scripted by the guy behind Onegai Teacher. If you’ve watched these shows, right off the bat, chances are you’ll feel the similarity – the scenery and artwork of AnoHana, the comedy of Toradora!, or, supposedly…the entire plot of Onegai Teacher.

I haven’t seen Onegai Teacher myself, but from what I hear, they’re calling AnoNatsu as Onegai Teacher 2.0. Probably a strike one for some who hated Onegai Teacher, or an instant watch for some others who loved it. Then again, some just don’t want to watch a rom-com that’s just gonna be like any other rom-com out there. Although I still can’t say otherwise, I’d still like to point out that this show just can’t catch a break.

It’s not a bad show, but it’s still pretty basic as seen in episode 1. We have our main male Kirishima Kaito, a high school freshman and video recording enthusiast, who has the strangest encounter one night while testing his camcorder at a concrete connecting bridge. “Something” crashed nearby where he was standing, and he was tossed out of the bridge’s railings. He wakes up in his room and dismisses the events of the night as a dream. The summer was nearing, and he, and his three friends – Ishigaki Tetsurou, a sort-of playboy and dude friend, Tanigawa Kanna, the friend with a not-so-subtle crush on our lead, and Kitahara Mio, the shy-yet-used-as-fanservice girl – decide on filming a movie as a means of having fun during summer.

The premise itself is not necessarily unique, but like I said, this series has some heavy Onegai Teacher influences, and to those that have no idea as to what those influences might be, it would be the addition of another genre in the mix – sci-fi. Yep, sci-fi. Our main female, Takatsuki Ichika is not from Earth. According to episode 2, she yearns to see some sort of scenery that can only be seen here on Earth, and, add to the fact that her ship was the “something” that crashed, she now stays with our male lead. Again, a pretty basic move for these guys.

That being said, I’m enjoying it so far. I love these kinds of shows (save for the ecchi part) and I’ve honestly been looking forward to this from when it was first announced. So yeah, I’ll be back come episode 3 and talk more about the other character in their little group. Till then ^^
